DLSS 4.5 Ray Reconstruction vs Super Resolution: What's the Difference?

DLSS is a suite of technologies. This guide separates their roles so you do not pay for a feature that does not solve your problem.

QUICK ANSWER

Smoother play or cleaner reflections? The setting to change depends on the problem.

DLSS is a suite, not one switch. Separating its features helps you avoid buying the wrong GPU or expecting the wrong benefit.

For per-title status, use the DLSS 4.5 Ray Reconstruction games list.

Three features, three things to look for

Super Resolution

Lower-resolution renderImage at display resolution

Try it to reduce rendering work. Compare fine detail and stability in motion.

Ray Reconstruction

Noisy ray-traced lightingReconstructed, denoised effects

Compare reflections and dark areas. The game must support the feature.

Frame Generation

Already-rendered framesGenerated intermediate frames

Check responsiveness too: the displayed FPS counter alone does not describe how the game controls.

Which feature solves your problem?

GoalFeature to checkCheck first
Render at high output resolution more efficientlySuper Resolution (SR)Quality mode and clarity in your game
Clean up noisy ray-traced reflections and lightingRay Reconstruction (RR)Ray tracing and per-game RR support
Increase displayed frame outputFrame Generation (FG)Base frame rate, latency and RTX generation

For release timing and availability, see the release page. For individual titles, use the supported games list. NVIDIA App 11.0.9 places RR under Graphics → Program Settings → Driver Settings → DLSS Override - Model Presets → Recommended.

What does each feature do?

FeatureInput and purposeWhat it does not guarantee
Super ResolutionReconstructs a higher-resolution image from a lower internal render.Identical quality in every mode and game.
Ray ReconstructionReplaces traditional denoisers and reconstructs noisy ray-traced information.A universal FPS increase.
Frame GenerationInserts generated frames between rendered frames to increase displayed smoothness.A high base frame rate or identical latency.

Why Ray Reconstruction and Super Resolution are easy to confuse

Both reconstruct image information. Super Resolution starts with a lower-resolution render and reconstructs a higher-resolution output, reducing the cost of rendering at the display’s final resolution.

Ray Reconstruction instead starts from noisy ray-traced lighting information. It replaces multiple hand-tuned denoisers to produce more stable, higher-fidelity ray-traced results.

What changes with DLSS 4.5 Ray Reconstruction?

  • ReconstructionThe updated model targets more stable detail and lighting in motion.
  • ParametersThe model processes 20% more parameters.
  • PerformanceNVIDIA states performance similar to the previous model.
  • Data and controlSpatial awareness, training data and temporal controls are expanded.

Those claims describe the model itself. They are not a universal FPS benchmark.

What does Frame Generation add?

Frame Generation is separate from both reconstruction systems. It inserts AI-generated frames between rendered frames to improve displayed smoothness.

A low base frame rate does not become the same experience as a genuinely high rendered frame rate. Input latency, frame pacing and game simulation still matter. Support also differs by RTX generation and feature.

Which feature matters most to your buying decision?

Image quality at 4K

Start with Super Resolution quality and raw GPU performance. Ray Reconstruction matters most with demanding ray tracing.

Path tracing

Ray Reconstruction becomes central because denoising quality is fundamental to the image.

144 / 165 / 240 Hz

Raw performance, CPU limits and base frame rate come before generated FPS.

RTX 20 / 30

The model is now available on these generations; check whether the actual ray-traced workload remains fast enough.

RTX 5070 Ti / 5080 / 5090

Compare workload, resolution, VRAM, PSU and cost rather than DLSS branding alone.

FAQ

Is Ray Reconstruction an upscaler?

It is a ray-tracing reconstruction and denoising system. Super Resolution is the feature primarily associated with reconstructing the final display resolution from a lower internal resolution.

Does Ray Reconstruction replace Frame Generation?

No. They solve different problems and can work as parts of the broader DLSS suite when supported.

Is DLSS 4.5 Ray Reconstruction only for RTX 50?

No. NVIDIA says the new Ray Reconstruction model is for all GeForce RTX GPUs.
