GeForce 617.14: three useful fixes, but one crash remains open

GeForce 617.14 does not promise a general FPS increase. Its value is more specific: three documented fixes, four newly supported games and one crash it still does not resolve.

The three fixes target symptoms you can identify

The official 617.14 release notes say Judgment, Lost Judgment and Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. could fail to launch after installing driver 616.56. NVIDIA now lists that issue as fixed.

Two fixes cover displays: no picture on a Samsung Odyssey G95NC over HDMI after moving to R615, and some DisplayPort monitors failing to wake from sleep. If you have none of these symptoms, these fixes alone do not make the update urgent.

The extended-session Assassin's Creed Shadows crash remains open

NVIDIA still lists Assassin's Creed Shadows returning to the desktop after extended gameplay following the 616.56 update. Its presence under open issues means 617.14 is not a confirmed fix for that case.

NVIDIA also calls the published list a subset of all changes. It does not establish that every crash or black screen is driver-related, nor that every unlisted problem is resolved. If your current version is stable, keep its version number and installer before changing it.

Game Ready confirms a target, not a frame-rate result

The driver adds stated support for CONTROL Resonant, Gears of War: E-Day, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered and AION 2. NVIDIA's September 22 announcement ties those releases to DLSS 4.5, path tracing or RTX features depending on the game, but it supplies no measured performance gain between 616.92 and 617.14.

The schedules remain separate: the driver is available now, while CONTROL Resonant launches September 24, The Witcher 3 Remastered September 29, Gears Early Access October 1 and its full release October 6. Our Gears of War: E-Day requirements analysis separately explains the hardware ray-tracing requirement and upscaling targets.

Should you replace 616.92 now?

Yes, if you plan to play one of the four supported titles at launch or you have one of the fixed problems. In that case, 617.14 gives you a verifiable reason to move. If 616.92 is stable and those games do not matter to you, waiting does not forfeit any officially quantified FPS gain.

For a controlled install, close GPU workloads, record your settings and download the correct package from NVIDIA's official 617.14 page. After restarting, check the symptom you meant to fix before changing anything else.

The practical takeaway

GeForce 617.14 is a targeted update: three games that stopped launching and two display cases are fixed. The extended Assassin's Creed Shadows crash remains officially open. Update for a specific need, not for a broad performance gain NVIDIA has not quantified.
