CPU BUYING COMPARISON

AMD or Intel: how should you choose?

SHORT ANSWER

There is no universally superior brand. AMD is often very strong for gaming, efficiency and platform longevity; Intel can be especially compelling for certain applications, Quick Sync, connectivity and bundle pricing. Always compare the exact model and total cost.

For a mainly gaming PC

Compare average performance and especially 1% lows in the games you play. AMD X3D processors use a large cache that can produce excellent results in many games without winning everywhere. Intel remains competitive depending on model, game engine and promotions. At 4K with a saturated GPU, the gap between two strong CPUs can be much smaller than at 1080p.

For video editing and streaming

Check the exact application, codec and export method. Intel processors with integrated graphics can provide Quick Sync for some H.264, H.265 or AV1 workflows. A graphics card may already handle much of the encoding, so do not pay for a CPU feature your GPU and application already replace.

For rendering, compilation and virtual machines

Core and thread count can matter more here. Compare render or compile time rather than one synthetic score. Also verify maximum memory, PCIe lanes, sustained power and cooling. A slightly slower but much more efficient CPU can be preferable in a machine running ten hours per day.

Platform and upgrade path

Socket alone is not enough: examine officially supported generations, BIOS, memory and board features. AMD states that 600- and 800-series AM5 boards support AM5 Ryzen processors, with a BIOS update sometimes required. Intel compatibility varies by generation and socket. An upgrade path has value only if you realistically plan to replace the CPU.

Power, heat and noise

Do not compare only the TDP printed on the box. Look at measured sustained-load power, then add the cost of a suitable cooler and a board able to power the processor. For a compact or quiet PC, efficiency may matter more than a small peak-performance advantage.

Real cost in Canada

Build two complete carts in CAD: processor, motherboard, memory, cooler and taxes. Include CPU-board bundles, discounts and whether a cooler is included. A $100 CPU difference can disappear when the other platform needs a more expensive board or cooler.

Quick decision by buyer profile

High-end gaming

Compare a relevant Ryzen X3D with the Intel option at the same total cost, using the same GPU and resolution.

Video editing

Check Quick Sync, codec, GPU acceleration and results in your exact application.

CPU workstation

Compare job time, maximum RAM, PCIe lanes, power and noise.

Budget PC

The strongest CPU-board bundle often wins. Check the cooler and integrated graphics.

No universal brand winner

A brand can lead one generation and lose another. Product names also cover very different prices and power levels. Compare exact CPUs at the same complete platform budget.

Integrated graphics can change the build

An iGPU can provide display output, troubleshooting and hardware media functions even with a discrete GPU installed. Confirm the exact CPU suffix and feature set; do not assume every model includes graphics.

Questions to answer before choosing

  1. Which GPU and resolution will be used?
  2. Which three applications matter most?
  3. Are an iGPU or Quick Sync required?
  4. What does the board with the required ports cost?
  5. Will the upgrade path actually be used?

FAQ

Is AMD always better for gaming?

No. Some Ryzen X3D models are very strong, but the result depends on the game, GPU, resolution, price and exact Intel competitor.

Is Intel always better for productivity?

No. Quick Sync and some software can favour Intel, while other workloads favour AMD. Measure the exact application.

Should I choose the longer-lived socket?

Only when you realistically plan to upgrade the CPU. An unused upgrade path has no practical value.

Premiere Pro: separate playback from final export

A processor can shorten an export without fixing choppy playback in your source codec. Make two comparisons: a timeline with your actual camera files, then an export to your delivery format. Record whether decoding and encoding use the CPU, integrated graphics or discrete GPU. Puget Systems’ application-specific recommendations explain why CPU selection depends on the media workflow; their advice is external evidence, not our own benchmark.

If proxies already make editing smooth and exports run while you are away, a faster CPU may change little in your working day. If you repeatedly wait for previews, evaluate that exact operation. A gaming average cannot answer either question.
