DLSS Unlocked: what your RTX can gain, and what the mod cannot promise
Keeping a card that still does the job makes sense. That makes DLSS Unlocked worth a look if you own an RTX 20, 30 or 40 card. Before getting excited about the FPS counter, though, look at how those frames reach the screen.

A collection of mods, not an NVIDIA update
DLSS Unlocked brings community tools together around OptiScaler and DLSS Enabler. The project advertises frame-generation and neural-rendering features for certain DirectX 12 games. It is independent of NVIDIA: installing the package does not turn an older GeForce into an RTX 50.
Game support matters too. The repository requires native DLSS Upscaling and Frame Generation support; multiple-frame generation has additional conditions. An RTX compatibility label alone cannot tell you whether your particular game will work.
On an RTX 3080, the frames do not all come from the same place
According to the developer, the frame-generation bridge uses AMD FSR 3.1 on RTX 20 and 30 cards. On RTX 40, DLSS-G can produce the first additional frame, with the rest depending on the pipeline. Neural rendering is a separate feature again. Reducing all of that to one number leaves out much of the explanation.
Imagine two screenshots showing 120 FPS. If one counts interpolated frames and the other counts only frames rendered by the game, they do not demonstrate the same work. That is an example of how to read a counter, not a measurement of this mod. Motion, visual defects and input response also matter.
The detail that would stop me before installation
The creator limits the tool to single-player games and says not to use it in multiplayer or anti-cheat-protected titles. That rules out casually adding it to your online shooter. The repository also documents possible crashes, including with some RE Engine games and Linux/Proton configurations.
If you want to explore the project, read its requirements and known issues first. Keep copies of files you change and record the version you try. If you simply want an uneventful gaming evening, waiting for reports involving your exact game and card is a reasonable choice.
Is this a reason to replace your GPU?
I would not base a purchase on a mod’s promise. Compare graphics cards using the game without this modification as your starting point, then consider the extra features separately. The additional Canadian dollars should address a real need, rather than just a large multiplier.
