QUICK GUIDE · GPU BUYING

Can your power supply handle a new GPU?

The wattage printed on the label is not enough. Check quality, age, connectors, cables and total-system power.

SHORT ANSWER

Use at least the exact GPU manufacturer’s recommendation, then add headroom for a power-hungry CPU, an older PSU or a partner card with a raised power limit.

1 · Wattage

Official reference recommendations include 650 W for RTX 5070 and RX 9070, 750 W for RTX 5070 Ti and RX 9070 XT, 850 W for RTX 5080 and 1,000 W for RTX 5090. These are system recommendations, not GPU-only consumption.

2 · Connectors

Confirm the number of PCIe 8-pin plugs or a suitable native 12V-2x6 cable. Never use a modular cable from another PSU. When an adapter is included, connect every required cable according to manufacturer instructions.

3 · Condition

Even a quality PSU is affected by age, heat and sustained load. Verify the exact model, warranty, protections and 12 V capacity. An unknown 850 W unit is not automatically better than an excellent modern 750 W model.

4 · Installation

Fully seat the connector, leave room before bending the cable and make sure the side panel does not press on it. After installation, watch for restarts, odours, unusual noise and heat; stop if a connector becomes hot.

Reliable, identifiable PSU?Wattage alone does not describe protection

Old or heavily used PSU?Age and heat reduce headroom

How to make the decision

Account for CPU, motherboard, fans, pumps, drives, USB, transients and aging. Never mix modular cables. Fully seat 12V-2x6, avoid a tight bend and stop for odour, abnormal heat or restarts.

Start with the exact GPU and complete platform

A system recommendation is not the card’s consumption by itself. Record the board partner and exact MPN, then account for the CPU, motherboard, fans, pumps, drives, powered USB devices, transient peaks and aging margin.

Connector rules that cannot be skipped

When a card requires several PCIe 8-pin plugs, prefer separate PSU cables unless the manufacturer says otherwise. For 12V-2x6, a native cable supplied for the exact PSU simplifies installation. Fully insert every connector and leave space before the first bend.

Never reuse a modular cable from another power supply merely because the plug fits. PSU-side pinouts can differ even between models from the same brand.

Quality, age and useful headroom

An 80 PLUS rating primarily describes efficiency at defined loads; it does not summarize electrical quality. Also check protections, warranty, 12 V capability, independent testing, fan behaviour and the unit’s real history.

Useful headroom can help with transient peaks, noise, aging and a defined upgrade. Extreme oversizing does not increase FPS and mostly raises cost.

When to replace the PSU

  • The exact model is unknown or poorly documented.
  • Required connectors are missing or cables are damaged.
  • The system already shuts down or restarts under load.
  • The new configuration would run continuously near the unit’s limit.

FAQ

Does a larger PSU increase FPS?

No. It prevents stability problems when capacity or cabling is insufficient.

Can I use a modular cable from another PSU?

No, unless the manufacturer explicitly confirms compatibility for both exact models.

Is a quality 750 W PSU better than a generic 850 W unit?

Often, but the required capacity must still be met. Quality cannot compensate for a genuinely undersized unit.
