COMMERCIAL DECISION GUIDE · 2026
Gaming PC Electricity Cost in Canada
A gaming PC does not draw its PSU label continuously. Consumption changes at idle, in games, during AI or rendering and with display brightness. The calculator below makes no claim about your provincial rate: use the current marginal rate from your own bill or utility.
Checked August 18, 2026Cost = average wall power in kW × hours used × your current price per kWh. Measure at the wall and enter your own utility rate; PSU wattage is not consumption.
INTERACTIVE CALCULATOR
Estimate the cost of your own PC
Enter measured wall power and the marginal rate shown by your utility. Taxes, fixed charges and tiering are not added automatically.
Formula: (watts ÷ 1,000) × hours/day × days/month × CAD/kWh.
Decision table
| Usage profile | Measure | Important adjustment |
|---|---|---|
| Occasional gaming | Average wall power during a normal session | Use actual weekly hours, not 24/7 |
| Daily gaming and streaming | PC plus displays and capture equipment | Separate active and idle periods |
| AI, rendering or rented compute | Sustained wall power over a full job | Include utilization, fees and cooling |
| 24/7 server | Idle and loaded duty cycle | 24 hours × 365 days |
Measure at the wall
Use a reputable plug-in meter or monitored UPS and observe a representative session long enough to include idle menus and heavy play. Software sensor totals can omit motherboard, memory, drives, fans and conversion losses.
Include displays and accessories
A monitor, second display, speakers, powered USB hub, network equipment and room cooling can add meaningful energy. Measure them separately if you want to know the PC alone, or together if the goal is the complete desk cost.
PSU efficiency changes losses, not the workload
A component workload requires a certain DC output. The PSU draws more AC power at the wall because conversion is not perfect. Efficiency varies with load, input voltage and model; an oversized label does not mean the computer constantly uses that wattage.
For paid compute, calculate net value
Net income = gross revenue − electricity − platform fees − maintenance reserve. Model several utilization levels and include unavailable gaming time, heat, network, downtime and component wear. A machine that is profitable at perfect utilization can lose money in a realistic month.
FAQ
Does an 850 W PSU use 850 W?
No. It describes output capacity. Actual wall draw follows the components and PSU efficiency.
Which Canadian electricity rate should I enter?
Use the current marginal energy rate that applies to the additional kWh on your own utility bill. Add taxes or variable charges if your comparison requires them.
How do I calculate a 24/7 computer?
Use measured average kW × 24 × 365 × price per kWh, or split idle and loaded hours for a better estimate.
Verdict
Measure a representative workload at the wall, use your own current marginal rate and separate active from idle hours. That produces a decision-grade estimate without pretending PSU capacity or an old provincial rate is consumption.
